Isn't the coolant service life something like 750,000 miles? The extra cost of the CAT coolant is completely negligible on a cost per mile basis. Speaking only for myself, if I was charged with maintaining a truck owned by my employer I would run the CAT coolant. If I cannot find Rotella ELC, what could I use to mix with my Red Rotella ELC coolant in my truck I think they have only pre-mix ELC at Walmart. The only one approved for CAt EC1 is Rotella ELC, with nitrite.

I believe Caterpillar was involved in the initial research involving Diesel cylinder liner cavitation erosion. Mobil Delvac Extended Life Coolant/Antifreeze -C Series are recommended by Imperial Oil for use in cooling systems including Caterpillar, Detroit / MTU, GM. It gets confusing with all the ELC coolant from Rotella. Caterpillar allows the use of other coolants in Cat engines when they meet the Cat EC-1 spec which includes nitrites and molybdates, but recommends a shorter change interval of 3,000 hours or two years. Part of the reason the CAT coolant costs 3 times as much may be due to the CAT name but part of the cost may also be for superior coolant - I don't know for sure. This added level of protection is a contributing factor to Caterpillar’s recommending a 12,000-hour/6-year change interval for Cat ELC. The two that I know are molybdate based are the Rotella Ultra and Delo. That being the case, it may or may not matter to you but the red CAT ELC is a carboxylate based system.
